In this guide, we will explain in detail the KYC check and provide additional recommendations on the individual stages of the procedure.

What is KYC, and why is it necessary?

KYC (Know Your Customer) is an identification process needed to establish the client’s identity to get information about with whom you interact. Such verification is performed to exclude any suspicious activity to protect ourselves from the illegal activities of counterparties. Thus, some projects impose additional requirements when distributing tokens to participants wishing to receive an allocation in private project rounds.

Which identity documents can you use when going through the procedure?

Our partner service OnDato performs document verification exclusively of state-issued documents.

You can pass the KYC check using the following documents:

  • Passport: new-style internal passports with an MRZ zone (Machine-Readable Zone).
  • Identification cards (ID).
  • Driver’s License.

Before going through the KYC procedure, be sure:

  1. that your document has not expired (the document must be current as of the date of KYC);
  2. that if it is an internal passport, it has an MRZ zone.

Please note that you must prepare the document you will be using for KYC in advance.

Immediately after clicking on the KYC link, the current session is considered open and cannot be minimized, and the process must be completed once to the end, as described in the instructions. Otherwise, the session will be reset.

You can repeat the KYC procedure only after 2 hours — when the session is refreshed.

Taking a picture of a document. Basic recommendations

When passing by passport:

Position the document as shown in the screenshot below. The MRZ area should be under the white and gray dashed line:

If passing with an identification card (ID) or driver’s license:

  • If using these documents, two photographs will be required — the front of the document and the back of the document.
  • The front of the document will be photographed first (Side 1). Position the document in the photo field as shown in the screenshot below:

Then, after clicking “Continue”, you need to take a photo of the back side of the document (Side 2). Position the document in the photo field as shown in the screenshot below:

General Tips:

  • When photographing the document, there should be no glare, highlights, or other objects falling into the photo field selected for the photo.
  • The photo should not be dark, blurry, or small-scale.
  • The text of the document should be readable.
  • If there is insufficient light, please use an additional light source to improve the image quality or take the photo under a natural light source.

Face Photography

Use the smartphone’s frontal camera to take pictures of your face.

Use the following guidelines at this stage:

  • The face should be framed, and the oval of the face should match the highlighted frame as much as possible.
  • It is necessary to maintain a neutral facial expression.
  • When taking the picture, the service will prompt what actions are necessary to move the face closer to the camera or further (when the frame is narrowed or widened).
  • Try to take the picture in a well-lit room or natural light.
  • Make sure there are no bystanders within view of the camera.
  • The photo should not be blurred.

If the identification is unsuccessful, you will receive a notification on the screen. You can only try again within the current session three times, and the current session will then be closed.

You can repeat the KYC procedure only after 2 hours — when the session is refreshed.
