A constant calibration of a company’s purpose is important for companies of all shapes and sizes. Recently, we have been deliberating what we stand for, and why.

We have come to the realisation that as we have grown our capabilities, customer base, and staff count, we have an opportunity to deliver more value to society, customers and stakeholders than our original mission allowed.

We started Marshmallow with the intention of helping migrants find affordable insurance easily. Whilst we are still 100% committed to accomplishing this, we feel there are other people we can help too — lots of them.

We are proud to share an updated mission that reflects this broader belief.

Our new mission: We are building a world where insurance benefits everyone. This means using technology to build products that are affordable, instant, and inclusive.

We use this mission to unite us, motivate us, and direct our decision making. The make-up of this mission rests upon the premise that it is possible to do so via three principles:

1) a shared dissatisfaction with the present state

2) a shared vision of a better future, and

3) an articulated path to said future.

A world where insurance benefits everyone: This statement is an assertion that, in the present state, insurance does not benefit society, customers and stakeholders — and, we want that to change. We believe this is an assertion laced in truth — using the metric that only 30% of people have a positive view of insurance as substantive evidence.

To get to this future, we believe insurance products need to be affordable, instant, and inclusive. But what does this mean?

Affordable — at the heart of it, insurance products are there to enable and mitigate risk-strewn endeavours and lives. The cheaper this service can be delivered the better for the customer.

Instant — customers value things as quickly as possible, the best speed we can reach: instant.

Inclusive — the unbanked, the migrant, the flexi-worker, the unemployed, all need to have access to financial products — yet they find it much too hard to do so, we are changing that.

To realise this future we are using Technology.

We are proud to be working towards this new mission and are committed to measuring our success vs. said mission. We started this company to make sure technology drives positive change in insurance, and believe with this mission we will achieve that.
