Martial Arts Legend Gives Away His Fortune!
We don’t need any scientific proof to confirm the fact that modern-day society is a bit crazy. The technological progress in the last 20 years and especially the birth and rise of social networks have made an enormously positive and negative impact on the people. Our social lives at times became full of stereotypes, greed, selfishness, money envy, and distorted perspective.

However, there are plenty of self-aware people out there who represent everything opposite from the others when it comes to modern lifestyle and perspective. Their actions are restoring faith in humanity and are also encouraging others to reflect on their lives and question their beliefs.
Chow Yun-fat is a well-known person in the martial art world! We’ve all seen his movies at some point in our lives and imitated his moves in front of the mirror. When the famous actor came out earlier this year and stated he’s giving his fortune to charity, this martial arts legend became even bigger! And you won't believe how much he gave…

Giving without asking for anything back is a true definition of a martial art lifestyle. That said, for many martial artists, this gest of humanity is a reasonable decision and the lifelong obligation of every individual.
Martial artists are primarily recognized for their strength and physical capabilities, but the most powerful thing they have is a free and open mind! Martial arts could improve the life perspective of every person, and if you haven’t read it by now, our article on “Why Martial Arts Will Prepare You For Lifetime Learning” will give you a better insight into the minds of a true Master. For sure, Chow is one of those people who has been led by martial arts philosophy and his beginnings and life perspectives are very interesting!
Humble beginnings

Chow was born on 18 May 1955 and raised in Lamma Island, Hong Kong. His father Chow Yung-Wan worked on a Shell Oil Company tanker, and mother Chan Lai-Fong was a cleaning lady and a farmer. Rather than playing around as most of the kids do, Chow spent most of his childhood activities helping his parents. In the morning, he would typically sell the herbal jelly and tea-puddings on the local streets with his mother, and in the afternoon working in the fields. After his family moved to Kowloon, Chow continued to support the family by working as a postman, bellboy, and taxi driver.
A childhood dream developing into reality
Guided by his teenage dreams of becoming an actor, Chow decided to send the application to the actor-trainee program and pursuit a better life. Shortly after, he received a positive response and got accepted by the TVB, which happen to be the largest television station at that time.
Chow quickly put his charming persona to work and started receiving more spotlights by getting key roles in television series like “Hotel” and “The Bund” which were very popular at that time. However, his dream about acting on the big screens would have to wait until 1986 and the action movie “A Better Tomorrow” which literally exploded all over Asia and made Chow a superstar.

In the next four decades, Chow will enjoy the great relationship with the famous movie director John Wooplay and act in over 70 movies, win countless awards and become a national hero. Even the famous Los Angeles Times proclaimed him as “the coolest actor in the world.” Some of his best movie titles are:
· A Better Tomorrow (1986)

· The Killer (1989)

· Hard Boiled (1992)

· Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)

Living a simple and happy life
Four decades in the film industry brined him the estimated fortune of around $714 million HKD ($627,360 US)! However, during his interview with JayneStars.com, Chow surprised everyone by stating that he’s monthly expenses are around $800 HKD which is around 100US$!
The most astonishing fact about Chow is that growing up in a humble and poor society didn’t wake up greed, ego, and addiction to money which will typically force him to “buy” his happiness. He never enjoyed luxury and spending the money on some “objects”. Instead, he can regularly be spotted buying the clothes at discount shops and living a healthy life by regularly training and hiking in the mountains.

Giving the entire net worth to charity
Taking everything into account, it’s not a surprise that Chow and his wife Jasmine Tan have decided to donate all of their savings to charity. Most importantly, they both have each other’s support and completely believe in their future charity work. Asked to explain his actions, Chow perfectly stated the following:
“The money’s not mine. I’m only keeping it safe for the time being. My dream is to be a happy and normal person. The hardest thing in life is not about how much money you earn, but how to keep a peaceful mindset and live the rest of your life in a simple and carefree manner.” — source
As a community, we’ll always respect his successful career and take his lifestyle and actions as life lessons!
