Is This Now Acceptable Behavior?

There was a rally for Harris on the northside of the Roosevelt Bridge last Saturday. A group of mostly women but including some men were waving signs. You know…the usual.

Four 17-year-olds wearing Trump red shirts with his photo imposed and giving a middle finger to the world begin making problems. One of the kids decided to punch a woman in her seventies, who could be his grandmother, in the gut knocking her down. This is what passes for political discourse today.

This behavior is all around us. It has become acceptable to throw a punch or two to someone carrying a sign with a message you disagree with. It is vigilante violence that is condoned by Trump as he carries on his own rallies.

I am writing this the day after the election, so I know who won. But it seems to me all Americans are losers if this is how we have taught our children to behave. Here is a kid that is not even old enough to vote but he is trying to influence an election through terror and intimidation. I wonder where he learned that.

When a majority of the country elects someone who obviously doesn’t believe there is anything wrong with throwing a sucker punch to an old lady with an opposite political belief, we have a problem. Trump espouses this behavior to millions of his followers. This is now the person who will move into the White House in January.

The U.S. has a problem and it has to do with more than just our next president. If this kid decided to sucker punch your wife, daughter, mother, or grandmother, what would you want to have happen? Would you care whether he was wearing a red obnoxious shirt or not?

That 17-year-old committed a crime and should be punished. What about his parents who must have pointed him in the direction of committing his actions. What about his mentor, the former and future president, who is teaching his followers that violence in the political realm is just fine if it is for him.

And besides, Trump is never to blame for anything. He even once said he has never asked God for forgiveness because he hasn’t ever done anything to forgive. That is the guy half of America is returning to the White House
