Relax, You Have This

It must be election season.

On Saturday March 16th I received an alert from Chief Deputy John Budensiek “calling with an important public safety message for all coastal community residents in Martin County.” The critical message was that there was “credible” intelligence that migrants from Haiti could be smuggled and landing on Martin County shores.

Anyone who has lived here for a while knows that Haitians, along with Cubans, try to make the risky crossing quite regularly. It comes as no surprise that when they make landfall, they are soon picked up by ICE or local law enforcement to be turned over to the Feds. This is not exactly news.

Just like the purported “convoys” streaming up from Central America through Mexico, about the time they near the border the seriousness of the claim dissipates…though both the boat and border migration are serious national concerns, they don’t need to be hyped for political points.

“The Sheriff’s Office Marine, Aviation, and Road Patrol Units” will be working with state and federal authorities during this crisis. I am glad to know that. It would suggest that Budensiek then is not going to be a “constitutional sheriff” since he is playing nice with the other law enforcement agencies. A “constitutional sheriff” means he is supreme and doesn’t have to listen to courts or recognize federal or state authority. It is a plus for me in the voting booth.

John, I can guarantee that you are going to be our next sheriff. So, relax and take it easy. I would be surprised if you drew any credible opponents. For better or worse, you are a creature of Martin County’s “Good Ole Boy” network and of the department.

It is a long way to August or God forbid November. It may be too early to pull out the southern invasion announcement…the one shown with Broward and Dade felons driving up 95 to invade our homes with pillowcases. There is plenty of time for that.

Seriously if you want something to promote, how about traffic enforcement by all your deputies on road patrol. If there is one constant complaint that I hear from people, it is the utter breakdown of motorists obeying the rules. It’s not glamourous but it is necessary.

If you want to please the people who live in Trailside and other communities surrounding Pal Mar, then stop the total disregard of those who are imperiling the lives of the residents by their reckless behavior. Form a task force to go in and enforce the law. Assist Martin County’s agencies to remove illegal structures and other items that are not supposed to be there.

I bet if you put as many resources into traffic enforcement and Pal Mar as you do to the menace of Haitians and Browardians, we would have a more livable county. It is easy to scare some folks with the outer county menace, but we would all be safer with stopping road rage and the constant gunfire that many must endure coming from Pal Mar.

John, you got this. At your age, you could be in the job for 25 years. I have been told that you are a good cop by other law enforcement people. You need to be that and put away the politician.
