11 players from Napa County schools named to Prep2Prep All-North Coast Section softball team

The Prep2Prep 2022 All-North Coast Section softball team, announced recently in a report at www.prep2prep.com, includes 11 players from Napa County schools.

Vintage High School has five players on the team.

American Canyon High has three players on the team.

American Canyon’s Angelia Rodriguez, a junior outfielder who compiled a .442 batting average with 10 doubles, four home runs and 31 RBIs, and Raegan Jackson, a senior utility player who had a .582 batting average with 11 doubles, five triples, 10 home runs and 37 RBIs, were named first-team All-NCS.

Vintage’s Shelby Morse, a senior utility player who compiled a 9–0 record and 0.34 earned run average as a pitcher while also hitting .493 with seven doubles, seven home runs and 26 RBIs, was also named first-team All-NCS.

Vintage’s Raimy Gamsby, Angie Rubacalva and Emily Vanderbilt were each selected second-team All-NCS.

Gamsby, a senior pitcher, was 8–4 with an 0.85 ERA.

Rubacalva, a freshman outfielder, batted .380 with six doubles and five home runs.

Vanderbilt, a junior utility player, batted .343 with nine home runs and 24 RBIs.

Audrey Manley, a freshman utility player for Vintage, was named third-team All-NCS. Manley batted .390.

Napa’s Ella Johnson and Dalila Tapia, Shelby Padgett of Justin-Siena, and Kylee Sandino of American Canyon were each named honorable mention.

Joelle Aiello ended her collegiate softball career at Valley City State University (Valley City, North Dakota) by rewriting the school’s record books.

Aiello, a Vintage High graduate who is from Napa, set school career records for doubles (56), walks (68), games played (219), and runs scored (61).

She also set single-season records for RBIs (61), slugging percentage (.849) and home runs (18).

Aiello ranked fourth in the NAIA this year for home runs (18) and eighth for slugging percentage (.849).

She had a super senior season at shortstop, as she was named:

* North Star Athletic Association Player of the Year.

* First Team All-Conference.

* NSAA Gold Glove recipient.

* NAIA second-team All-American.

* NSAA Scholar-Athlete award.

Aiello is a strength and conditioning major.

Brandon Torres of American Canyon and Nathan Jewell of Napa placed in the Junior Tour of Northern California’s Tour Championship July 26 and 27 at Poppy Hills Golf Course at Pebble Beach.

Torres shot 77–78–155 and tied for 36th place.

Jewell shot 77–81–158 and tied for 45th place.

The California Pacific Conference, which includes Pacific Union College of Angwin, was one of 19 conferences to be recognized as a Champions of Character Conference Five-Star Award winner in 2021–22, the NAIA announced in a report on July 28 at www.calpacathletics.com.

The California Pacific Conference has received Five-Star distinction every year since the award’s inception in 2009, according to www.calpacathletics.com.

A conference collectively attains the Conference of Character status, according to www.calpacathletics.com, when over two-thirds of its members reach at least the Bronze status.

Pacific Union College was one of five conference schools to earn Gold Star status.

According to the report, at www.calpacathletics.com:

“Institutions are measured on a demonstrated commitment to Champions of Character and earn points in character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion. Institutions earned points based on exceptional student-athlete grade point averages and by having minimal to no ejections during competition throughout the course of the academic year.

“The Champions of Character scorecard measures each institution’s efforts and success in the areas of teaching, building, and reinforcing the NAIA’s core values of Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Sportsmanship, and Servant-Leadership. Points are given for community service, teachable moments, and a host of other positive standards. Points can be deducted for ejections and sportsmanship lapses.”

Colt Maloney of Napa finished fifth in the boys 14–15 division of the Foxtail Junior Championship on July 23 at the Foxtail Golf Club’s South Course in Rohnert Park.

Maloney fired a 7-over-par 78 in the Junior Golf Association of Northern California event.

Kathleen Scavo of Benicia finished third in the Beaumont Emergency Hospital Babe Zaharias Open, a Women’s All Pro Tour event, July 20–23 at Beaumont Country Club in Beaumont, TX.

Scavo, a Justin-Siena High graduate who played her college golf at the University of Oregon, earned $5,000 after shooting 7-under-par 281, with rounds of 71, 70, 68 and 72.

Rico Abreu of St. Helena finished sixth in the 55-lap feature race during the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series’ Ironman 55 at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 on Aug. 6 in Pevely, MO.

Abreu earned $2,300.

It’s a 1/3-mile, high-banked track.

Madi Kindred and Nathan Hiss of Pacific Union College attended a three-day Student Athlete Council meeting at California State University, Maritime Academy in Vallejo, the California Pacific Conference announced in a report on July 26 at www.calpacathletics.com.

“Representatives from 10 of the 13 Cal Pac schools made the trek to the Bay Area, receiving training and providing proposals to enhance the student-athlete experience throughout the Cal Pac,” the report, at www.calpacathletics.com, said.

Kindred, who is from Spanish Springs, NV, is an outside hitter on the volleyball team.

Hiss, who is from Orinda, is on the cross country team.

Justin-Siena High was honored as one of the 2021–22 American Baseball Coaches Association Team Academic Excellence Award recipients, it was announced on July 27 in a report at www.abca.org.

College and high school programs from around the country were awarded the 2021–22 ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award, presented by Sports Attack.

The ABCA said over 250 high school programs and more than 420 collegiate programs were recognized with this year’s award.

The award highlights programs — coached by ABCA members — that posted a GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale for the entire 2021–22 academic year, according to www.abca.org.

“Coaches were able to nominate their teams for the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award following the conclusion of their spring semesters prior to the nomination deadline of July 14,” www.abca.org reported.

“The American Baseball Coaches Association has a long tradition of recognizing the achievements of baseball coaches and student-athletes.”
