Year in Review: 2018–2019
This year was a great one for Mason Hack Club. Weekly meetings, Smash tournaments, and Hacker Fridays are only a few examples of the events hosted. Over five of the club’s leaders had paid internships with Cincinnati companies in their IT departments. Mason’s executive director Megan Cui even gave a TED talk!
Mason Hack Club also hosted CincyHacks Jr. on April 6th. It was the region’s first hackathon for kids aged 10 to 14. The event took place at the Cengage Learning building in Mason. More than seventy kids were in attendance! Over the course of 9 hours, students learned to develop their own websites and present to their peers. Katherine Hu, a junior and one of the organizers of the event, said “The group of fourth and fifth graders I worked with were awesome — despite this being their first time coding, they were committed to create something that they were proud of! I’m glad that we could challenge them to think logically and problem solve, something younger kids aren’t always exposed to. It was also really cool to see that the room was full of girls. There was nearly a 3:1 girl to guy ratio!” Overall, the event was a big success!
Eight of the club’s leaders were seniors this year. They will be missed! Listed below are each of the their positions and the college they’re planning to attend.
Alan Guo, Assistant Outreach Director → Pomona College
Will Mechler, Development Director → Miami University
