Transform your practice

RMIT’s Master of Design Futures is a graduate education program for working professionals who want to learn about meaningful, potent and valuable domains for design practice.

The Program is fully online, and has a strong sense of being a Program community. That is, regardless of the course you are in — whether its your first or last — you are crucial to the conversations in the community.

Your own experiences and expertise feed into a different type of learning environment. MDF is very live and of the moment. Our industry lecturers, who lead the educational experience, work at the leading edge of their fields, in organisations that are valuing our practices, such as Service and Strategic Design. The educational leads are also active in local, national and international design-industry groups, and are shaping the future of their fields.

You are invited into their networks and exposed to the reality of working in these emergent environments. In return your contribution is to develop a critical edge for these fields. In other words, we go beyond the buzzwords to develop deeper, more sustainable and socially valuable practices.

The Program leads towards your own Future Design Research Project (the Capstone course) that is your way of making a design stance. Along the way, we encourage and support you to become public in your contribution to contemporary design. This is through publishing your ideas and material work, presenting at network events and engaging internationally. While this work has academic rigour, it is also intended to have impact in the place where design meets society. That is, we work towards lively and imaginative writing and expression.

Ultimately this takes you into a leadership role, whether that’s leading in a team; leading in your own studio or organisation; leading in the broader design community; or developing a thought leadership or public intellectual profile.
