This 24 Flavours literary journey is part of a series of writings from a few years back when Math Paper Press was actively publishing it. The series has since gone into hiatus but I’ll sharing the pieces that were written. Each piece is based on a food theme, 24 in total. I had devised mine to centre on my family, and some of the storylines are interconnected. Not all 24 stories are completed so you’ll have to check back periodically to read all of them.

When your Pa was dating me, he used to bring me to the Satay Club at the Esplanade. I think this was back in the late ’70s, and the place was super popular with couples like us who were looking for places to pak tor. You know, last time, so hard to find places where young couples like us can go out and have a romantic date but still decently easy on the pocket.

And Satay Club had the best of many many worlds. We had the breeze from the Marina Bay area, can watch the sunset if you go for an early dinner, and of course, the satay lah. The air will be filled with the satay aroma, the smoke from the barbecuing of the meat added to the romantic feel.

Your Pa loves meat, always must have meat for every meal, and I must have rice for every meal too. So our Satay Club dates turn out to be the best combination because the ayam or kambing satay satisfied your Pa’s meat craving, and the ketupat provided me with the rice.

Anyway, you know what Ma is trying to teach you right. Next time, when you choose a wife, must make sure you must find the right combination like us. Ma don’t need to like the girl or the girl to like me, as long as she treats you good, and knows how to take care of you can already.
