Hello Mati, Goodbye fraud

Mati officially opens in Mexico! We have been working with many exciting partners in the recent months, and I’m so excited to finally share it with you.

But first…

What is Mati?

It’s a technology company that makes a simplified user registration & onboarding tool. We built a product for companies and developers, to embed in their app or website, that verifies user identity with a few clicks. A process that is currently frustrating, and may take up to a week, is now simple and instant. The company was founded in silicon valley two years ago with a backing of some of the best Venture Capital firms in the valley, and the world.

Our mission at Mati is to build a global verified user identity, an access point to the digital economy, and to standardize it across not just companies, but all industries. Establishing a person’s identity on the web or in an app is currently very difficult and costly both financially and in terms of user experience. We develop computer vision biometric technology, that recognizes the user seamlessly with near 100% accuracy, on any device, app or website. We use this technology to develop and facilitate trust online. We will not stop until every authentication, check-in, signup, and registration is seamless and secure.

Why Mexico?

I’m proud of the fact that international companies are choosing to come to our country and participate in solving local problems. But the reason why Mati chose to come to Mexico is something I’m less proud of — this country has one of the highest online fraud rates in the world! This presents both a challenge and an opportunity. Such high levels of fraud make it very difficult to succeed as an online seller, and even harder to provide services that depend on trust, such as credit, car sharing, or renting a room in your apartment. At the same time, we have an opportunity to showcase to the rest of LatAm, and to the World, how to use advanced technology to solve societal problems. At Mati, I represent both a proud Mexican and a team member, which is why I’m especially excited to not only help small developers and businesses onboard users with no fraud but also to help our bigger partners drive Mexico toward a more inclusive financial system.

Some examples

Since we started working in Mexico, we began working with a number of partners ranging from Fintech companies to e-commerce. While I cannot share a full list of our clients quite yet, here are a few practical applications we’re working with now:

• Credit: when a company wants to help people get loans, especially those who are outside of the formal financial system, the obvious obstacle on their path is lack of any information on the customers who are applying for the loan. That’s where we come in. We help them by providing a registration button that verifies a user’s legal documents, their biometric profile, and match it with many other signals like geolocation. A virtually unknown user who would likely be rejected from the loan process, in a click of our process suddenly becomes a 37-year-old mother in Oaxaca.
• Ride-hailing: we have become accustomed to clicking a button on our app and having a car come a moment later to take us wherever we need to go. However, an unfortunate amount of these rides end in a criminal event, against either the passenger or the driver. We’re adding value by bringing identity, trust, and transparency into these services.
• E-commerce: many of the online shops in Mexico have such high financial fraud that the companies can hardly operate. The only option those stores usually have is to block many transactions, most of which are not fraudulent, which unfortunately ends up lowering their revenue and frustrating their users. In this use case, we work with other payment partners and are very hopeful that we will be able to make a difference in the lives of e-commerce owner and shoppers.
