BOOKS I READ: Alexander’s Bridge by Willa Cather (1912). Bartley Alexander, a renown bridge engineer, lives in Boston with his wife, Winifred, often traveling to oversee his various commissions. In London, he runs into Hilda Burgoyne, a stage actor, renewing a tryst that unravels his comfortable life. His guilt burns, and soon, his situation becomes untenable. While his amorous triangle is inflicting havoc on his mental well-being, he rushes to check on one of his construction projects. His assistant has called worried they are using faulty load calculations.

Alexander’s Bridge was Willa Cather’s first novel. She eventually became well-known for her novels of the Great Plains, including O Pioneers! She was recognized with a Pulitzer Prize for her fifth novel, One of Ours, set during World War I.
