BOOKS I READ: Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt (2022). Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at a small aquarium, writes a journal counting his days in captivity. When the elderly cleaning lady at the aquarium, Tova Sullivan, makes a connection with him, anything is possible, including solving the mystery of her son’s disappearance and death.

Shelby Van Pelt’s first book has hooks. She adds a third storyline that eventually comes together with the other two, although at first it feels somewhat random. While the scene stealer is Marcellus, it’s Tova Sullivan, a stoic Swede, that shines throughout. She would make a great grandmother.
