BOOKS I READ: Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward (2017). Three generations swirl in the torpid air of the Deep South. Young Jojo lives with his grandparents, Pop and Mam. Jojo has a special bond with his little sister, Michaela (Kayla), named after her White father, Michael, who is serving time at Parchman, the ruthless state penitentiary, a place that Pop knows all too well. Jojo’s mother, Leonie is present, but caring for her children is not her forte. When she gets high, she has visions of her brother, who was killed by Michael’s redneck cousin. His death is deemed a hunting accident, but the official report isn’t believable.

Jesmyn Ward intermingles chapters narrated by Jojo and Leonie, except when Richie steps in to tell his dismal story. He’s Pop’s inmate friend from Parchman, long dead, but still roaming the Earth and visible to Jojo and Kayla.
