BOOKS I READ: Upstream — Selected Essays (2016) by Mary Oliver. Delightful and insightful reflections on the beauty of nature and it’s austere and callous hunger; the outsized influence of Emerson and Whitman on her writing; and the gradual but steady changes—natural and otherwise—of her beloved Provincetown.

Oliver’s essays stick with you. I won’t ever look at seagulls the same—nasty scavengers stealing french fries from kids’s fingers—after her playful rescue steals her heart, nor will turtle eggs ever be unscrambled, nor will any spider web be left without inspection.
