BOOKS I READ: Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders (2017). A series of reports and first-person accounts describe the circumstances around the death of Willie Lincoln, the President’s young son, whose souls ends up in the bardo, a purgatory-like place. When the President visits the cemetery, he crosses over into the bardo, his visits narrated by languishing flawed souls, awaiting their fate there.

(The format of the text takes some getting used to, the short snippets breaking the normal reading flow. The books feels more like a play.)
