The great Tim Sabean, who I worked for and with at New York radio station 92.3 K-Rock, has joined Westwood One, where he will serve as head of digital content.

Tim, a longtime programmer and radio station owner, has most recently shown a remarkable affinity for digital content as a program manager at Twitch. Prior to that, he had a great run as a programmer at SiriusXM, where I myself was once a programmer and host. Tim came on board long after I left, and was in charge of some of the most high-profile, important channels, including Howard Stern’s two channels and Opie and Anthony’s now-defunct ‘Virus.’

Tim was already a broadcasting veteran when he joined K-Rock as Program Director in 1993, bringing with him a wealth of experience programming legendary stations, including WBCN-FM/Boston, WRKZ-FM/Pittsburgh, and most recently Philadelphia’s WYSP-FM. He also had an eye for talent that was made clear by his choice of APD/Music Director: Andre Gardner, one of the most talented, affable and all-around brilliant people in broadcasting. It would be difficult to overstate how much I learned from the two of them, but suffice it to say that after a couple of years under their tutelage I was able to transition from an eager intern to full-time air personality.

Westwood One is a broadcasting giant with which I have an extensive history and a lot of great memories. I worked there frequently in the 1990s, on a multitude of projects ranging from hosting nationally syndicated specials to producing daily shows that could be heard across the country. Before satellite radio – where both Tim and I spent some time – Westwood One was the premier hub of national radio. It was then, and remains today, a content giant . From it’s New York headquarters, it serves up unique and exciting programming, interviews with celebrities, newsmakers and opinion leaders, and serves as a staging ground for new and exciting broadcast talent.

Under the auspices of such great creative management like Dia Stein, Cindy Sivak, and Andy Denemark, Westwood One brought exciting and unique programming, to terrestrial radio. By bringing Tim Sabean on board, they are staking their claim to podcasts and streaming. I am confident that he will bring an injection of fresh talent and ideas, provide more exposure for up and coming podcasters and streamers, and establish a multi-platform digital presence for radio personalities.

Digital content, even more than radio, brings content creators and consumers together and is constantly evolving and innovating. Congratulations to Tim, and to Westwood One, for taking a bold step into the future of entertainment and broadcasting.
