Dear Readers + Writers —

Hang on to your winter hats because this letter is chock full of Big Announcements…
Changes afoot!

As I write, we’re close to publishing the last few pieces for our “Love Lies Bleeding” issue. If the comments so far are any indication, this set of stories has truly moved you. Here are a few sound bytes:

On Lisa Renee’s “Sixteen”:

“This is breathtakingly beautiful.” — Saurabh Rai

On Paul Fitzpatrick’s “Berlin Calling”:

“Few stories leave me with a glow I can barely fathom and can’t begin to explain. Thanks for this one.” — Mike Robertson

On Tom Farr’s “The Perfect Letter”:

“This is beautiful. You can really feel what the character feels.” — Oscar Armenta

On Jamey Baumgardt’s “Love Potion”:

“Lovely.” — Teri Culbert

In March, we’ll continue to bring you great stories via Medium. Then, beginning in April, we invite you to follow along as we move Made Up Words to a new platform. You’ll still find a fresh story each week on Medium, but moving our publication will allow us to pursue a goal we’ve had from the start: to pay artists for their work. If you’re a writer, or just interested in learning more, please read on…

Submissions to our April issue are open from March 1st - March 7th. During that time, we are interested in all types of subject matter, but will take special note of work that reflects the theme of:

“See the world,” wrote Ray Bradbury in Fahrenheit 451. “It’s more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories. Ask for no guarantees, ask for no security.”

For our April issue, we’re on the lookout for stories that pull us out of our everyday existence and transport us — even for just a few moments — to spots around the globe, to imaginary worlds (speculative writers, represent!), to the future, and to the past. In short, make us forget we’re sitting at our desks. Send us your best, and we promise — as always — to read every word.

Our general submission guidelines apply and have been updated a bit, so please be sure to review them before sending your work our way.

Important information to note for this transition to our new platform:

  • Out of the stories selected, one per week will appear on Medium. They will be chosen at the discretion of the editorial team.
  • All stories (including those that appear on Medium) will appear on our new platform.
  • Our approach to paying writers is new (and exciting, we think!), and we are committed to providing complete transparency to all involved.

We’ve shared what we know thus far, and we’ll keep you posted as things move along! Meanwhile, if you have questions or concerns, please email us: submissionstomadeupwords@gmail.com.

On behalf of the team at Made Up Words, thank you again for subscribing, writing, reading, and recommending!

Best,
