Impossible Choices

Movies set up impossible choices:
save the baby or save the world
but usually find the way
for the hero to do both
without actually having to make
the impossible choice.
In the real world impossible choices
remain, well, impossible.
Shipwrecked sailors
resorting to cannibalism
so that at least a few of them
can stay alive.
Or the impossible choices
faced by those trapped at the top
of the World Trade Center
when they found no escape:
burn or jump.
None of them stayed alive.
Most of the impossible choices
we think we face, fortunately,
are usually quite possible
if perhaps difficult (at times).
Each problem solved gives us
more confidence for the next one.
