Russian Dolls

I knew a girl in college
who really, really liked a boy.
She concocted an elaborate scheme
involving her friends and Russian dolls
to ask him on a date.
A procession of girls
came into the store where he worked
and gave him things.
He was too stoned to understand
what was going on.

But I like the idea of nesting dolls
when we apply it to ourselves
that there is always more and
more to discover
if we take the time to explore.
I don’t think those two
ever went out on that date but
they went on with their lives.
I wonder what they now think of
her attempt to woo him
if they remember it at all.
Thirty-year-old memories
nested inside me leading to
a curiosity about where
and who they are now.
I hope they are well.
