10 Cute LGBTQ+ Children’s Books

Gay children’s books are not something most of us had when we were kids, but they are an amazing thing to see now. Here are ten cute queer children’s books for anyone to read.

Julian is a Mermaid by Jessica Love — This book is about a child named Julian who comes to understand their relationship with gender after meeting three women who are dressed as beautiful mermaids. Julian also wishes to dress up and be a mermaid but is uncertain of how their Abuela will feel.

The Whispers by Greg Howard — This story is your classical fantasy coming of age story which focuses around 11-year old Riley and his friend Gary. The two go on a grand journey together to find the whispers who will hopefully grant their wishes.

My Footprints by Bao Phi — This children’s story follows a girl named Thuy. She grows up feeling different from her peers because she is Vietnamese-American and also has two mothers. One day while walking Thuy finds herself on a grand adventure and eventually with the help of her two moms to support her, she finds courage.

The Bravest Knight who Ever Lived by Daniel Errico — This book follows the story of a little boy named Cedric who eventually grows up to become a brave and daring Knight. After both a prince and princess have been captured by an evil fire breathing dragon Knight Cedric goes to rescue them. After rescuing then two of them the princess proposes to Cedric only for him to reveal that he has fallen in love with the Prince.

Love Makes A Family by Sophie Beer — This children’s book displays the many different kinds of families that exist within our beautiful world and how love is what connects them all.

And Tango Makes Three by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell — This story is based off the real-life events of two male penguins named Silo and Roy. These two penguins had been a couple for years and were sad that they could not have an egg of their own. Until they are given an abandoned egg to care for.

Santa’s Husband by Daniel Kibblesmith — The book follows Santa and of course his husband as they spend time together around the North Pole. Its adorable.

It Feels Good to Be Yourself: A Book About Gender Identity by Theresa Thorn — This book is a little more educational as it attempts to educate its readers about gender identity and the many ways people experience gender.

Mommy, Momma, and Me by Leslea Newman — This rhyming children’s book follows a day in the life of a lesbian couple and their young daughter as they play and enjoy their time together. Fun fact: Leslea is a longtime friend of the Matthew Shepard Foundation and won their Making a Difference Award a couple years ago!

I am Jazz by Jessica Herthel — Another book based on a true story follows the life of Jazz. Jazz is a young transgender woman and this book tells the story of how she came to be her true self.

About the Author:

Emil Tinkler is a 21 year old college student living in Central Florida. They are a gay agender person. Emil is a psychology major and a humanities minor. They want to be a therapist one day and help trans kids access medical care, and they love Harry Potter, Bad Suns, and LGBTQ activism. Emil was Vice President of the LGBTQ group on their campus for a year, and will continue to keep activism close to their heart in everything they do.
