10 Queer Christmas Bops to Listen to this Season
by Judy Bokao
Christmas is just around the corner, and we are excited to make new Christmas memories and welcome a new year. It has been quite the year and it is okay if you are not feeling merry, but here are the top 10 LGBTQ+ Christmas songs that will help you get in the festive spirit.
Glittery by Kacey Musgraves and Troye Sivan
The song is from Kacey’s 2019 soundtrack album, “The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show.” Kacey is considered one of the biggest LGBTQ+ allies and it was great to see her feature Troye Sivan in this classic Christmas song. Troye is an openly gay singer and songwriter and the mash-up of their vocals make this song really sweet.
The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t be Late) by Tegan and Sara
This song was originally released in 1959 and there have been several renditions of it, including a Toni Braxton cover. In 2010, Tegan and Sara released their cover of the song. The Quin sisters long established themselves as queer icons and have been open about their experience growing up as identical twins who are also gay.
Make it Jingle by Big Freedia
Who says you can’t twerk your way to the Christmas spirit? It is certainly not Big Freedia, who released this upbeat song and created a new Christmas anthem. Get your self-confidence on and bounce around as you prepare for Christmas .
Step into Christmas by Elton John
Elton John is a living legend, and he makes us fall in love with Christmas all over again in this upbeat song. The lyrics just make you feel nostalgic and you find yourself wanting to watch the snow fall.
Santa’s Coming for Us by Sia
As usual, Sia delivered like the true artist she is when she released this song as the lead single from her eighth studio album in 2017. It is one of those songs that will uplift your spirits and make you want to sing along to the catchy and relatable lyrics.
Splits on Christmas Tree by Todrick Hall Featuring Unterreo Edwards
Todrick Hall is known for releasing one gay anthem after another. He has a unique way of incorporating singing and dancing and it is always fresh. In this song, they serve up a bit of humor as well. If you decide to do the splits by the Christmas tree, just be careful not to hurt yourself.
Ay, Ay, Ay It’s Christmas by Ricky Martin
Ricky Martin is a certified LGBTQ+ icon and he brings out the la vida loca in all of us. It is therefore no surprise that he has a Christmas song. I don’t know about you, but if Ricky says it is time to sing “Feliz Navidad,” then it is time to sway those hips and sing along.
It Wouldn’t Be Christmas Without You by Wrabel
Wrabel is giving us all the feels in this Christmas song as he expresses how he misses the person he wants to kiss under the mistletoe and we can all relate. Christmas is about spending time with the people you love so it is sad when circumstances fail to allow it. As you wait for your loved ones, this song will make you realize how special their presence is.
Lonely in December by Kehlani
Being alone during Christmas can be crushing. If you are in your feelings and can’t help but feel blue about not making it home for Christmas, then you will probably vibe to this song.
Fairytale of New York by Rostam
Rostam did a cover of this classic Christmas song and he sounded heavenly. Many people are unfamiliar with his music but I think he really did this song justice. Listen to his rendition and tell me your thoughts.
