8 Awesome Queer Musicians

It is not easy to come to terms with our sexuality and it is even harder to have to tell millions of people who we truly are. These musicians have proven that there is a new sense of freedom and acceptance that comes with revealing to their millions of fans their authentic self. They have been brave enough to share their deeply personal experiences in their journey of self-acceptance and pride with the public. If that is not bravery, then I don’t know what is.

Troye Sivan

Troye Sivan is a young 24 year old Australian actor, songwriter, singer and YouTuber. Sivan came out as gay in 2013 but he had already told his parents in 2010. He used his YouTube platform, which is one of the most subscribed channels in Australia, to come out publicly. Throughout his career, Sivan has spoken openly on the early struggles he has dealt with - especially when it came to publicly coming out. In an interview with Harper Magazine Australia, he admits he was terrified of admitting his sexuality for almost 15 years of his life.

He also revealed he often found it difficult linking his sexuality as part of his artistic identity. He has now come to terms with his sexuality and he says he is not ashamed of coming out publicly saying that “It is the best thing that I’ve ever done in my entire life.” It was good for his career and journey to becoming an LGBTQ+ icon. His music and YouTube videos have been heavily praised for their portrayal of his true self. He has won many awards and continues to inspire us to be comfortable with who we are.

Adam Lambert

Lambert rose to fame in 2009 when he participated in American Idol and finished as a runner-up. He has always been openly gay and is a true activist for LGBTQ+ rights. He has lent his time, resources and talent to be involved in projects that help the LGBTQ+ community. His involvement in projects such the Mosaic LGBT Youth Centre is meant to educate, support and inspire by offering a safe space and variety of programs for LGBTQ+ youth. He is well known for pushing for societal boundaries by highlighting double standard of ethics in media regulation.

He is not just a music icon but a philanthropist who inspires us to make the change we want to see in our society. In his own words, It’s about trying to raise awareness and getting people to take action.

Sam Smith

This 27 year old first shot into fame in 2012 after being featured on Disclosure’s breakthrough single “Latch.” They first came out publicly as gay in 2014 when they admitted to the end of their relationship with model Jonathan Zeizel. In 2017, they came out as genderqueer saying ‘’ I feel just as much a woman as I am a man.’’ They disclosed that they have spent most of their lifetime in an internal war with themself, trying to come to terms with their gender.

They stated that they were tired of the raging war within and had decided to embrace themself for who they are, inside and out. His song ‘How Do You Sleep’ showcased a new sultry side of their sexuality which was well –received and praised. This Grammy winner is not afraid to open up about their sexuality and has been really transparent about their journey to self-realization.

Todrick Hall

Todrick Hall is a very talented songwriter, singer, director, choreographer and YouTuber. He is a jack of all trades when it comes to the entertainment world. This 34 year old came out as gay when he was just fifteen. He revealed that he faced a lot of challenges because of his sexuality and ethnicity. He recalled his meeting with one of his former idols who told him “The worst thing a person could be was black and gay.” He said such comments made him doubt if he would ever make it in the Hollywood entertainment industry. He however came to realize that he was beautiful and he didn’t need anyone’s permission to be himself.

He went on to say that he is motivated to pave the way for future generations of young, black, gay men. “I want to be the first gay black man to do things so that gay black men 15 years down the road won’t even have to think about them and can just be themselves.” He is clearly doing that given his recent music videos which have wowed his fans and proven his critics wrong. His music videos “If You Like Men” and “Fags” have been highly praised for inspiring pride in the LGBTQ+ community.

Mitch Grassi

One of our favorite members of Grammy winning acapella music group Pentatonix, Mitch Grassi’s high notes are a force to be reckoned with. This 27 year old is also a member of Superfruit and has been openly singing about same gender love for quite some time. He has also been open with showing his support of the LGBTQ+ community. He even uses his amazing sense of fashion to show his support and his pride. Superfruit’s music videos have openly talked about the struggles of finding love as a gay man. If you have not checked out their fun, colorful music video “Heart Throb” you are definitely missing out.

Scott Hoying

Scott is also a member of the Grammy winning acapella group Pentatonix and Superfruit. He and Mitch have always been rumored to be together but they are just good friends. Scott has not been public about his sexuality but has been rumored to have publicly dated men. In one of their YouTube videos he admitted to wondering if he is pansexual. Scott has also been outspoken about his support of the LGBTQ+ community. Pentatonix have faced their shares of bullies because of their gay members but they have risen from it like a phoenix and keep getting better.

Lil Nas X

He is just a new face in the music industry but he recently came out as gay during the last day of Pride month 2019. He spoke candidly about how it took him a long time to come to terms with his sexuality. He disclosed that he used to pray that it was simply just a phase that he’d grow out of. He acknowledged that he hopes that other teenager going through the same thing will understand that they are not alone.

He said that it was much harder coming out to his dad compared to his coming out to his millions of fans. “It’s something I never probably would have done if I was still living with my parents,” the 20-year-old expressed in an interview. He confessed his independence from his parents was a huge help when it came to telling them his truth.

Calum Scott

This 31 year old first won our hearts with his beautiful voice back in 2013. He came out publicly as gay and noted that he had trouble with his sexuality during his teenage years but decided to be comfortable with it in his adulthood.

In past interviews, he opened up about the traumatic time he had coming out to his friends. He also talked about the pressure of being in the public eye saying, “I felt a little bit under pressure that I would have to talk to people about it before I was ready. I struggled with it a little bit until songwriting came into the equation. I’ve used songwriting as a tool, I’ve used it as a way of being able to talk about how I feel…’’ His music has inspired many people to be open about what they feel and the public have shown him a lot of support.
