Hi friends! It’s been awhile since I made a blog post, so I hope you are all doing wonderfully! September 15th through September 21st is bisexual awareness week, so as a bisexual, I should comment on it. There are a lot of misconceptions about bisexuality and bisexual people in general floating around on the internet. I’m gonna take this opportunity to smash some of those in the spirit of bi week!
Myth: Bisexuality is transphobic/nonbinary-phobic
The definition of bisexual has evolved significantly in recent years, moving from “liking both genders” to “liking people of two or more genders.” This change was mostly because of the increase in people identifying outside of the gender binary, and bisexual people not wanting to change the label with which they identified. Even if the definition was still binary, trans people are and always have been included in the definition. Liking both men and women includes trans men and trans women because trans men are men and trans women are women.
Myth: Bisexual people are inherently unfaithful
Saying that someone is unfaithful simply because they like multiple genders is like saying that a man will cheat on his girlfriend just because he likes other girls. It’s not true. While some people do cheat on their partners, bisexual people aren’t any more likely to cheat than anyone else!
Myth: Bisexuality is a new phenomenon
Bisexual people have been around since the dawn of time. Historic bisexuals include William Shakespeare, Virginia Woolf, Walt Whitman, Oscar Wilde, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Malcom X. While Bisexuality isn’t new, acceptance for LGBTQ people is on the rise, and therefore a lot more people feel comfortable coming out as bisexual now than in the past.
Myth: People tend to be “bi now, gay later”
While it’s totally valid to question what label you use for your sexuality, and it’s totally okay to change what label you use, Bisexuality is not just an in between for gay and straight- bisexual is its own identity and it’s super valid. It’s also the largest percentage of LGBTQ people in the general population!
Myth: Nonbinary people can’t be bisexual
Bisexual people can be of any gender identity and expression! Since bisexual means liking two or more genders, nonbinary people are included in folks bisexual people can like and folks who can be bisexual!
I hope you all have a little better understanding of bisexual people! Have a great bisexual awareness week everyone!
