#Letters4TransKids Send Messages of Hope to Trans Youth Amidst Legislative Attacks

While politicians are uncapping their pens to sign transphobia into law, the rest of us are called to put our own pens to paper in letters to trans youth.

#Letters4TransKids encourages social media users to post messages of support for trans youth facing relentless legislative attacks. Launched by Ina Fried, a technology correspondent with Axios and trans woman, the first few messages have now become a movement. The young trans community has demonstrated remarkable resilience, standing strong as their own representatives legislate against their basic rights. They need our continued support.

In the first 4 months of 2022 alone, nearly 240 bills have been proposed against the LGBTQ+ community, most of which attack the trans community. In Florida, the notorious “Don’t Say Gay” law will prohibit any discussion of gender identity in the classroom. In Alabama, gender affirming therapy could be considered a felony and in several other states, parents of trans kids could be investigated as abusers.

While we can stand up and speak out against these frustrating attacks, Ina Fried is also showing us all how we can encourage trans youth being impacted most.

“As a parent and as an adult trans person who remembers what it was like to be a young trans person, I knew I had to do something,” Fried said in a Facebook post. “I can only imagine what it is like to be a trans kid right now, trying to find your own way while having to have your humanity and basic human rights up for discussion every day.”

After anti-trans laws continued to pass in state legislatures, Fried thought to herself, “What if we could send all trans kids a letter of love, or 10 letters of support. Yeah, that’s something I can do. And what if it wasn’t just me? What if everyone who supports trans kids wrote a letter, or made a short video or posted on social media. Well, why not? Let’s do it.”

After posting on Twitter and Facebook, a movement began. Users from all across the U.S. started to send in their letters of encouragement, from actors like Javier Muñoz to athletes like Kurtis Gabriel. Matthew Shepard Foundation staff also posted their messages of support.
