Fate had other plans and in 2004 the pair met again and soon after they began dating. According to sources, the couple moved in together in 2005. In an interview with People for her November 2005 cover story, DeGeneres swooned over her girlfriend, saying, “It’s the first time that I’ve known in every cell of my being that I’m with somebody for the rest of my life.”
The TV show host went on to propose to deRossi in 2008 even though the Supreme Court had yet to legalize same-sex marriage. They became a beacon of hope for the LGBTQ community when they eloped and got married on August 16, 2008. The couple has been together for almost two decades now and have survived the challenges. They had been rumors of divorce back in 2013–2014 but it is clear that they’re still in love and committed to making it work.

In a past interview while describing their unconventional relationship, RuPaul said, “I love him too much to try to put shackles on him. Love is free.” The couple tied the knot in 2017 to celebrate their 23rd anniversary.
