A Life Shaped by Music and Social Justice
Rep. Perez-Vega’s story starts not in the halls of government, but on the vibrant stage of the Twin Cities’ Latino nightclub scene. A self-described Hip-Hop performing artist and songwriter, Rep. Perez-Vega dreamed of a career in media and radio broadcasting. However, her cultural background, steeped in the rich traditions of Afro-Boricua Bomba and Plena music, ignited a passion for social justice within her. These musical genres, born from the resistance of enslaved Africans and Taino tribes in Puerto Rico, instilled in Rep. Perez-Vega a deep understanding of the power of collective voice.
From the Stage to the Streets
This passion for social change translated into action. Rep. Perez-Vega dedicated herself to community organizing, youth work, and cultural arts programming. She became a vocal advocate for issues like accessible healthcare, marriage equality, and housing justice. Notably, she was part of the Minnesota chapter of Insulin 4 All, which successfully passed the nation’s first Insulin Affordability Act.
A Calling to Lead
The tragic murder of George Floyd, someone Rep. Perez-Vega knew personally, served as a turning point. Witnessing the uprising that followed, Rep. Perez-Vega felt a powerful call to serve his community in a new way. Recognizing the trust and respect he had earned through his work in the arts and activism, Rep. Perez-Vega decided to enter the political arena.
