Scholarships for LGBTQ+ Youth
By Judy Bokao
Over the years, research has shown that LGBTQ+ people seeking higher education are severely disadvantaged compared to heterosexual students. This is exactly why LGBTQ+ students have more student loans than their counterparts. Research from Williams Institute, a think tank from UCLA Law, shows that LGBTQ+ adults ages 18 to 40 are much more likely to have federal student loans than non-LGBTQ+ adults.
Education is a key factor in life, and there is a need to reduce these disparities. LGBTQ+ students already face a myriad of issues when it comes to education. From bullying, legal attacks and homophobic encounters. By denying queer students access to quality education, we are condemning them to low-income jobs or unemployment and thus, the cycle of socio-economic disparity continues.
Thankfully, there are LGBTQ+ scholarships that offer queer students a chance to follow and pursue their dreams. Below is a list of scholarships for LGBTQ+ students looking to further their studies.
