Social Media Can be Overwhelming; These Self-Care Methods Help Me to Relax & Reset

We live in a generation where we are almost constantly glued to our phone and computer screens. We are surfing social media, commenting on strangers opinions, sharing our own opinions, and hearing people share their opinions about us. We are hearing devastating news stories and many of us are growing depressed by the current political climate. It can become quite overwhelming and even toxic to constantly be engaged with media. So from time to time, it’s good to unplug, relax, and reset. Self-care is so important and our generation cannot leave it out of our daily routines.

In this article, I’m sharing some of my favorite self-care methods that I have noticed to work for me over the years. Remember, that everybody is different, so you’ll have to find out what works for you specifically, but some of these might work for you too!

- I turn off my phone. For hours.

Being a social media influencer and somewhat of a public figure in the LGBTQ+ community can become quite exhausting with the comments continuously rolling in. Sometimes, I get a lot of ignorant messages. Sometimes, I just get too many work requests at once. When I feel myself reach the level that it’s too much, I turn my phone completely off and I let myself reset. No texts, no calls, no emails, no social media. Just me time…

- I meditate.

Meditating is only something I caught onto a few years ago. I tried for a long time to do it but just couldn’t really figure out to. Now, there’s tons of apps that make it way easier with guided meditations. I personally use HeadSpace. You can even find many free guided meditations on YouTube that are also great! I definitely feel a sense of relief on the days that I take a few minutes to meditate.

- I take a bath.

I put some organic and relaxing soaps and salts in the bath and fill it up with some hot water and soak for a few hours. For me, it’s another form of meditation, and helps me to relax and reset. Lighting some candles and playing some chill music can definitely help to create a more relaxing vibe as well.

- I read a book (or listen to an audio book).

I take a half hour or so and crack open a book. I just recently finished a book called Hero by Perry Moore. I definitely recommend this book to anyone reading this article, especially those in the LGBTQ+ community. It won a Lambda award! Reading can be very relaxing and it’s definitely a way to just slow down the pace for a minute and get lost in someone else’s story. When my eyes and brain are just a little too tired for the actual pages, I listen to an audio book. I’m currently listening to Bruce Springsteen’s memoir.

- I take a walk. Or exercise.

Exercising, even for a short period of time, makes me feel really good about myself. It’s definitely a mood booster for me. I like to ride an exercise bike or go out and ride my BMX bike or skateboard. I also enjoy taking my dog on walks. It’s very relaxing to be in nature and to see my dogs excitement over simple things like grass and fire hydrants. Really though! Exercising is very refreshing. I try to do at least 30 minutes a day to stay feeling both physically and mentally healthy.

There are so many ways to practice self-care. These are just a few of mine. Others include but aren’t limited to, calling a close friend and talking, cuddling with my dog, blasting music in my car and singing at the top of my lungs, doing something that’s creative (music, art, writing, etc), and journaling.

Try to think of some activities that you do in your life that feel relaxing, or try to include some new ones into your routine. You’ll be amazed at how great it feels to take a little breather from social media. Unplug, relax and reset!
