WHAT I KNOW NOW: LGBTQ+ History Author, Sarah Prager

Name: Sarah Prager

Where you’re from: Connecticut

Where you live now: Massachusetts

What you wanted to be when you were a teenager: A writer! But I didn’t think it was a realistic career path, like wishing to be a famous actress when you grow up. I figured so few people actually can make a living as an author I wouldn’t pursue it.

What you do now: A writer! It’s a dream come true. My first book deal for Queer, There, and Everywhere dropped into my lap in 2016 and my life has never been the same. I’ve been full-time writing about LGBTQ+ issues and history (as well as other topics I’m passionate about) since 2020. It’s indescribably fulfilling.

What you’re most proud of: Being a mom and a writer. Both are important responsibilities that I work hard at doing as well as I can.

3 words that describe your teenage self: Activist, depressed, friend.

3 words that describe you now: Mom, responsible, fulfilled.

What you would tell your teenage self: You will find joy.

What you wish you knew about coming out that you know now: It opens the world.

What you love most about being a part of the LGBTQ+ community: Our identities are based around loving each other, being in community with each other, and having a shared history with each other. It’s absolutely beautiful to me and being part of an extended family is one of my favorite parts of being queer.

Person you most admire: Literally all trans people. Existing in a world telling them not to exist is a flex, no matter how they show up. (But if I had to choose one person I most admire, it would be my partner, who is trans and is a therapist helping other trans people to thrive.)

If you could change one thing about the world, you would: Bring liberation to all oppressed people.

What inspires you now: LGBTQ+ youth fighting for their rights.
