I was thinking about how much of the content we watch these days is forgettable/filler content. With that said there was some really incredible content last year and even some entertaining filler. Without further ado, the Media Minutes awards of worthwhile and not of 2022…

Movies

Best of the Best

  • Avatar: the Way of Water

Note, this rating is based on the spectacle and sheer awesomeness of seeing this movie in IMAX 3D. There are some movies that are just worth watching on the big screen, this is one.

Worth Watching

  • Hustle
  • Everything, Everywhere all at Once
  • Top Gun — Maverick
  • Elvis
  • I Want you Back

Always happy when there’s a surprisingly fun romcom to watch with my wife.

Guilty Pleasures

  • Lightyear
  • Bullet Train
  • Thor: Love and Thunder
  • The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special

Disappointments

  • Being the Ricardos

It’s crazy how often Amazon disappoints me with what should be promising source material.

  • Spirited
  • Disenchanted
  • The Northman
  • Black Adam
  • Good Luck to You, Leo Grande

Haven’t seen yet but want to:

  • The Woman King
  • Decision to Leave
  • Black Panther Wakanda Forever
  • The Fabelmans
  • The Banshees of Inisherin

Shows

Best of the Best

  • Fleishman is in Trouble

Claire Danes puts on a hell of a performance in a show that was exceptionally written and directed. This is definitely a show I won’t forget.

  • Andor

In the argument for best Star Wars content ever, but at the least a fitting part of the Rogue One story line. I’ll probably watch this whole series again and I never do that.

  • The Bear

Golden Globe for best actor was a shoe in, the way they build the intensity of this show with such a simple story-line is incredible. Made me appreciate the food service industry that much more, and also crave Italian Beef.

  • White Lotus

The tension throughout made this even better than season one.

  • Ozark

Fitting end to a good show.

Worth Watching

  • Severance

Amazing concept, frustrating plot

  • The Old Man
  • Pam and Tommy
  • Hacks

Guilty Pleasures

  • The Santa Clauses

All in all a solid Christmas story.

  • Moon Knight
  • The Sandman
  • Peacemaker
  • WeCrashed
  • The Thing About Pam

Disappointments

  • Lord of the Rings — The Ring of Power

Gave up after 1.5 episodes. Again, it’s crazy how often Amazon disappoints me with what should be promising source material.

  • The Watcher
  • The Recruit
  • House of Dragons

Yes, I’ll keep watching, but this show is essentially Game of Thrones season 8 but without the character depth. The jumps in time make it impossible to develop characters, or develop empathy for them.

Haven’t seen yet but want to:

  • Only Murderers in the Building
  • Dahmer
  • Yellowstone
  • Slow Horses
  • Black Bird
  • Tokyo Vice
