Maupin and Amtrak
There is no direct public transportation to Maupin but you can get close enough for friends in Maupin to come pick you up.
My recommendation? Go by train via Amtrak on the Empire Builder. It’s so much fun!!
Amtrak’s Empire Builder route starts in Seattle, Washington and terminates in Chicago, Illinois. This 7 days a week daily line picks up from Union Station in Portland OR at 4:45PM and arrives in Wishram WA at 6:55PM. This route goes along the Washington state side of the Columbia River. Wishram WA is just outside of The Dalles OR and is about an hour drive from Maupin.
Here’s an insider tip- When departing from Portland’s Union Station, find a window seat on the right-hand side of the train. From these seats you’ll have the best views especially when the trains makes its way along the Columbia River. No window seat? No problem. Get seated and then make your way to the observation car and view the sights from there. You can also hang out in the cafe car. There you can take in the sights along with a snack and a sip.
Because of its extensive route, these trains are equipped not only with observation, cafe, and sleeper cars, the coach seats on these trains are super comfortable with generous legroom. You’re also able to recline almost completely flat.
There are two stops between Portland and Wishram: Vancouver WA and The Bingen-White Salmon WA. The last stop is about ½ an hour from Wishram.
Please keep this in mind about the Wishram Amtrak stop. Likeing itself to a bus stop, this is a literal platform stop.There is no station and is particularly desolate. Stay in touch with whomever is picking you up. Especially if the train encounters any delays. Friends can also keep track of your train via Amtrak’s train tracker feature.
To return back to Portland catch the Empire Builder line at Wishram stop at 7:30AM and arrive in Portland at 10:10AM. Sit on the left-hand side and watch a beautiful morning unfold.
