Diversity in Tech: Women Level Up
The Maven Diversity group is happy to announce that our first Women Level Up meetup meets Monday, April 24th at 6:30pm. Women Level Up is a meetup hosted by the Mavenlink diversity group and is aimed at empowering all female and underrepresented software engineers and web developers through education, networking, and mentorship.
We open the night with a lightning talk by Katlyn Parvin to answer the question “Am I Senior Yet?” Following this, we’ll have a technical talk hosted by Andrew Huth about how to write code to make your application more accessible to differently abled individuals who have unique needs when browsing web pages.
Our Women Level Up meetup is the brainchild of Paulette Luftig and Catherine Meyers. Paulette began her engineering career at Dev Bootcamp five years ago and has been with Mavenlink for the past few years. After growing her skills to being a mid-level engineer, she struggled to find meetups in the city that are focused on mid-level engineers. Paulette went to meetup after a meetup and would be one of the most senior engineers there. She wanted to create a meetup that would help people who were already working as engineers take their careers to the next level while being sensitive to the barriers and issues that are unique to a woman’s experience as an engineer.
Similar to Paulette, Catherine started her engineering career at the Flatiron School bootcamp in New York. In addition to wanting to grow her technical chops past the point of mid-level, Catherine also wants to create a supportive space around some of the career aspects of moving from mid-level to senior and how to navigate that path, especially as a woman. Though there are certainly books to wade through, she’d like to promote networking and mentorship opportunities with this community.
We hope that this space will provide a balance of technical and career education that will help you level up. In this community, you’ll discover new potential career paths, gain a breadth of knowledge about other practices, stacks, and toolsets — something you can only gain by interacting with people outside of your everyday experiences.
Anyone is welcome to attend the Women Level Up meetup. The goals and subject matter of this meetup will however be geared towards mid-level women engineers and helping women in tech advance.
