As for my cause, I want to be a part of changing our world. I use business as a vehicle not because I care deeply about business. I don’t. What I do care about deeply is impacting people. Even during the depression or recessionary times, most people still have a job. We spend more time at work than we do at home. We spend more time with our teams than we do our own families. — Simon Sinek

Simon Sinek is a businessman, author, and motivational speaker who wants to revolutionise the business industry. He is against the unethical and selfish practices of businesses. It is interesting to reflect on his words, during COVID-19 that has completely transformed how the workforce operates.

His words are very profound. On an individual level, many of us would agree that were it not for virtual communication, isolation would be more harder than it is. This is because we would not be able to share our thoughts, plans, and feelings, with people outside of our homes. Indeed, it is the fun conversations on Whatsapp, the fulfilling Zoom Video calls, surprise phone calls, and the memes sent to our Instagram messages, that make self-isolation more bearable. This is because we long for a connection that cheers us up.

The pandemic has completely shifted how we see and value things. Before the Coronavirus, many of us were so busy with our day-to-day lives that we did not necessarily reflect on the beautiful moments and events. Now, we desperately wish for the walks near the sea with our family and friends, the school trips, and the tangible graduation ceremonies. Like all hardships, the Coronavirus crisis can be a great learning experience.

No matter how many movies and TV series we binge-watch, the longing for long-term connection can never be replaced. The Pandemic has taught us the importance of seeing people as unique individuals and not merely opportunities or emotionless robots. Self-isolation should also be a test of friendship to show how strong your relationship is. This is because the idea of friendship was never about having a bond, only during good circumstances. A true friendship is one where both people can maintain a good relationship during their worst and their best moments. Yes, it is strong connections with our fellow human beings that we need during quarantine.
