A humble relaunch and a quick re-introduction: Post “One”
Its been a while since we last said “Holy Moly,” but here we go again: HOLY MOLY!! Our book is SO very close to finding its way into the real world! Really!
I’m beyond happy to announce that our book will officially launch on September 15, 2016. If you’re so inclined, you can pre-order and you might just get your copy before that ;)
I’m humbled to admit that its taken 5+ years of work on this project to get it here… and I can’t believe it’s actually, finally happening.
I’ll be writing much more about the ups n downs of getting a product like this out into the world: the tribulations of maintaining independence, the perpetual promotion, the gory behind-the-scenes details of how a two-person team managed to get a stunner of a 136-page book with 950+ individual full color pieces of illustrated art into the world. This has been a wild mutha of a ride, and I can’t wait to share more of that journey with you.
To those of you just joining us: Hi! Thanks for coming! MAX & CHARLIE is modern take on a young boy’s Alice in Wonderland: a boy (Charlie!) chases his dog (Max!) through the surreal chaos of a dreamed New York City and learns the nuanced lessons of perseverance in a modern, abstract world. I wrote it as a feature film screenplay, and art-directed, produced, published, etc’d the same story into this graphic novel with UK-based illustrator extraordinaire Louis Neubert (who pencilled, inked, and coloured the entire thing).
I’m obviously biased, but I think this book is something special: it’s modern, unique, and vibrant… and we hope it will appeal to Space Cadets of all ages.
This will be the first book published by my small-but-well-established media company EXIT STRATEGY, and our American-made hardbacks and paperbacks will be distributed worldwide for our launch on September 15, 2016 (holy moly!) We’re also turning it into an awesome interactive ebook, made with software we created/developed with a team in Istanbul and Canada (with multiple translations/localizations distributed to PC, Mac, iOS, Android, Xbox, Playstation, and Oculus/virtual reality! Pull your socks up: some sweeeeet demos are coming soon!)
MAX & CHARLIE was created independently by a two-person writer-illustrator team over the course of five years, and its production was entirely self-funded (starving artist style). We had the opportunity to sell the property, both very early on and more recently: it would have been easy (and probably smart!) to say yes, and it would have been fun to name-drop our new business partners. But that was never the plan.
It helped confirm that we were on the right path, but I wanted something different: for more reasons than I can explain in this opening salvo, I wanted the experience of doing this thing wholly independently, without crowdfunding, if only to prove to myself that it could be done. (I also had a successful early career in Big Media and wanted nothing to do with its greed and waste — but that’s another story altogether!)
This is all to say that there have been roughly a zillion lessons I’ve learned from making this book — as I’m sure you hear over and over on these internets, making something-out-of-nothing independently can get a little rough. And yet its been incredibly fulfilling: it’s impossible to overstate how grateful I am for the process.
But we’ll dig into all of that and much more in the days and weeks to come! For now, I’ll just throw one last HOLY MOLY into the world.
September 15th! Put your party hats on, party people! This is going to be fun.
Until next time, much love and infinite gratitude…
