In a dramatic turn of events, the Apex Legends community has successfully swayed developer Respawn Entertainment and publisher Electronic Arts (EA) to backtrack on controversial changes to the game’s Battle Pass system.

The decision to revert these changes comes after a wave of backlash that saw the game’s Steam reviews plummet to “Overwhelmingly Negative” and a surge of player discontent.

The Battle Pass Backlash

Apex Legends, known for its dynamic battle royale action, recently faced intense criticism for its proposed Season 22 Battle Pass changes.

Initially, Respawn had planned to divide the seasonal Battle Pass into two separate passes, each priced at $10, eliminating the option for players to use Apex Coins — an in-game currency earned through gameplay — to purchase the passes.

This shift meant players would need to spend $20 per season, a significant increase compared to the previous model where completing a pass could fund the next.

In addition, a new Premium+ pass was introduced at $20, promising additional content but also fueling concerns about the escalating costs. The proposed changes were received by many as a blatant cash grab, leading to an outpouring of frustration from the Apex Legends fanbase.

Community Response and Impact

The response from players was swift and severe. Mass uninstallations, a flood of negative Steam reviews, and a surge of social media outrage highlighted the community’s dissatisfaction.

The discontent was not only about the Battle Pass changes, it was also related to cheaters and server instability that had long been a thorn in the side of the player experience.

The collective voice of the community created a storm of pressure that Respawn and EA could not ignore. For the first time in recent memory, the developers faced a unified player revolt that forced them to reconsider their approach.

A Victory for Players

On July 24, Respawn announced via social media that they would abandon the initial plan and allow players to continue using Apex Coins to purchase the Battle Pass.

Furthermore, to make amends, the developers revealed that the next Battle Pass would be accessible for free through in-game challenges. This move, while addressing some of the immediate concerns, still leaves the future of the two-pass system in question as Respawn intends to evaluate its impact going forward.

Looking Ahead

While this victory is significant, the challenge for Respawn and EA does not end here. The developers must now navigate a path to rebuild trust and address ongoing issues that have contributed to the current unrest.

It’s clear that players remain passionate about Apex Legends and are willing to take a stand for what they believe is fair and beneficial for the game.

As Respawn moves forward, the focus should be on creating better communication with the community, addressing long-standing issues, and ensuring that monetization strategies do not overshadow the core gameplay experience that has made Apex Legends a beloved title in the battle royale genre.
