Shamani plops down on the hotel bed, iPad in hand. She clicks on the Youtube app and searches Animal Planet’s channel to watch videos of cats and dogs.

“I was thinking about being a vet, but eh, I can’t make up my mind,” Shamani said.

Along with being a vet, she wants to be an astronaut, a Katsuki Bakugou cosplayer and a mom. She is also passionate about drawing, singing and joking around with her twin brother Daivani about Roblox memes.

This year has brought many new challenges for Shamani and her brother. They live with their mom and brother Cavion in a hotel in Bloomington. This temporary situation has led Shamani to start fifth grade at a new school, fully online.

“I’m lonely,” Shamani said.

Stuck in a hotel room, it is difficult for Shamani to feel connected with her classmates. However, this doesn’t stop her from trying.

“Shamani is willing to make connections, even though she’s never met any of [her classmates],” Shamani’s fifth-grade teacher Elizabeth Earnest said. “She’s really preserving through a lot of different things.”

If Shamani could change one thing about the world, it would be people littering. This stems from her love for animals and the environment.

“I like to be outside a lot,” Shamani said. “But there’s nothing to do because we live in a hotel.”

She is excited for when she can live in a place that allows animals and hopes to one day own a cat.

Whatever the future holds, Shamani will be grateful to be with her family. Although they can get on her nerves, family is what is most important to Shamani.

“We just laugh and laugh,” Shamani said.
