TikTok building futures behind the screens

During stressful times children like Mariama turn to TikTok for not only distraction but for doing what they love most.

Mariama, a fifth grader, a goofy jokester and future hip hop dancer and singer is one of the many students affected by COVID-19 as it has changed her schedules, schooling and held her back from sharing her goofy personality with all of her classmates, but it has not stopped her from reaching her future self.Being behind screens constantly during the new schooling of Zoom, TikTok gives the opportunity for students to be influenced and be themselves. TikTok grew 23 percent since COVID-19 it has been a home for users to express themselves and share who they are. The impacts of COVID-19 leaves children and students having to make changes as they have fewer opportunities to express themselves, show their personalities and grow into their future selves.

“It got me mad,” said Mariama “I want to bust 2020 up.”

Through the differences and frustration of COVID-19 Mariama takes action towards her dreams of being a future hip-hop singer and dancer, even if it has to be behind a screen. TikTok hands Mariama the opportunity to do what she loves as she can create dances as a distraction from the hardships of having to stay home and having to be more mature through tough times.

“Staying home is harder. I have to be more mature,” Mariama said “It’s hard being mature during these tough times.”

Mariama does what she loves through TikTok as she has to stay in her home and change her personality to work harder and focus more. As a fifth grader her expression and identity is important, through bravery and passion she has the opportunity to be creative making her favorite Tik Tok and being influenced by her favorite people like Charli Damelio.

“I think I’m doing bad in school, but I do TikToks and watch TikToks.” -Maxfield 5th grader, Mariama.
