Mayor of London awards eight startups with £15,000 each to tackle London’s most pressing social and environmental challenges.

Last night, eight of London’s most innovative tech firms won financial backing from the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, as part of the Mayor’s Civic Innovation Challenge, launched during London Tech Week in June.

The event at City Hall saw eight out of 14 finalists lauded for their innovative solutions tackling some of London’s most pressing challenges. Each company is awarded with £15,000 to test their solutions with partners.

“Many of London’s advances in the application of data and smart technologies are recognised around the world and I want London to become a global test-bed for civic innovation.” — Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London

Over the past month, the 14 finalists have been working together with leading corporates and public bodies to develop their plans to pilot their solutions. The next months will see the companies working closely with the challenge partners to test the solutions together, putting the needs of Londoners first.

Jessica Stacey, partner at Bethnal Green Ventures, the delivery partner for the Challenge, says:

“This competition has been a blueprint for getting these big institutions to collaborate with startups to tackle some of London’s major challenges. We’re excited to see what happens next.”

The eight winners are:

  • Dementia Services: Pearl Support Network (partner: Our Healthier South East London STP)
  • Active Travel: Go Jauntly (partner: TfL)
  • Electric Vehicles: Connected Kerb (partners: National Grid and Shell)
  • Affordable Housing: VU.CITY and Crossmap (partner: TfL)
  • Financial Inclusion: Quids In! (partner: Lloyds Banking Group)
  • Loneliness and Isolation: Buddyhub (partner: Hackney Council)
  • Physical Activity: Elemental — The Social Prescribing People (partner: Ealing Council)
