Pathfinding our way towards building an inclusive economy in our city, together.

Mayor Sohi, Erick Ambtman, Cheryl Whiskeyjack, Scott Crockett and Dr. Annette Trimbee speaking on the panel

Businesses and community organizations in Edmonton understand the benefit of inclusivity, and they know that the ways we build people’s capacity to participate in the economy allows them to be successful. Strong public services, community support, and access to participate in the workforce are the foundations of an equitable economy.

On June 28, 2023, I hosted a public panel discussion as part of my commitment to increase stakeholder engagement during my State of the City address on May 9, 2023. The focus of this panel was building and sustaining an inclusive economy here in Edmonton, and was entitled “The Economic Case for a More Equitable Edmonton”. I was pleased that the room reached capacity as many Edmontonians joined myself, Erick Ambtman of EndPovertyEdmonton, Cheryl Whiskeyjack of Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society, Scott Crockatt of Business Council of Alberta and Dr. Annette Trimbee of MacEwan University to take part in these important discussions.

We talked about what it looks like to build economic prosperity in Edmonton and the economic benefits of addressing social equity issues. Panelists gave examples of how businesses can better integrate social service into their organization and how topics like childcare, housing, and reconciliation can be seen as economic opportunities, not just social barriers.

I appreciated the robust discussion and important insights that our esteemed panelists shared, and I know that the next step towards building an economy for all of us means putting some of these ideas into action. One thing is certain — all Edmontonians want our city to thrive, and everyone deserves to be included.

Watch the full discussion below.

Together, we can build a more inclusive Edmonton for all of us.
