The way consumers are shopping is changing rapidly. There more options than ever for people to ‘shop’ for food; grocery stores, quick serve restaurants, fast-food and e-commerce. So what makes the grocery store the ‘main place’ for groceries and how do retailers continue to be the ‘go to solution’ to a changing demographic of consumers?

There is one section of the grocery store that appeases to both the millennial generation and baby boomer generation and it is called the heat and eat section of products. We pride ourselves on being in front of key new trends, and best in class in terms of managing the mix of items on shelf.

This paper will outline why the heat and eat product set exists today and how retailers can evolve the set to help meet the needs of the current and changing shopper to maximize their set for the future.

The changing consumer has caused changing dynamics in the way grocery shopping is done. Millennials are now the largest generation and represent about ¼ of the total US Population (Mintel, 2016). In addition to this generation being the largest they are also the most ethnically diverse population the United States has ever seen. This generation is changing the way past generations think, and they are changing the way American thinks about food.

While companies across the country are figuring out how to target this population the grocery industry is also figuring out how they can ‘appease’ these individuals with a set store front that hasn’t been updated in many years. The retailers that seem to challenge the go-to market strategy seem to be seeing success. These retailers are asking themselves key questions like: What do millennials want from a grocery store?

How can I appease the millennial generation without walking away from the baby boomer generation?

With all of these trends outlined above retailers are specifically questioning the relevance of a specific six feet set of space. To many retailers they know this as the Heat and Eat section.
