1 paragraph summary:
I found out about this book whilst googling the best fatanasy books in the world and found a list which referred to the “originals”. The very first fantasy books which created new story genres which were later copied and adapted by others. This book was described as the cultural phenomenon on the scale of The Lord of the Rings in China.
At first it was difficult to get into as there are so many new names and family connections. The book is also not afraid to make big time jumps as well as lean into supernatural fighting which is at first hard to get your head around.
But once you’re into it, the story had me captivated and I loved going out of my comfort zone and explore a chinese fantasy book. The book is set during the real-life Jin–Song Wars of the 13th century. Guo Jing the protagonist is raised in Mongolia by Genghis Khan after his father is murdered, and learns kung fu guided by masters of the wulin.
But as the good-hearted young man discovers, a hero is not merely born, he is honed in the moments when his love and loyalty are the most sorely tested.
