1 paragraph summary:

EPIC fantasy world of the ultimate pyramid scheme but with people’s lives and powers.

Such a fascinating world with fun twists and a light-hearted fun main character.

A massive plot throughout the book which gets more and more intricate, and I was so sad when I finished the book but the second part hadn’t come out (!)

A bit of Humour

So let’s start again. Without the lies, this time.” “Alright,” I lie.

The Lie of the Pyramid Scheme

STRONGER TOGETHER. It’s the great lie of the Hierarchy, proclaimed generation after generation by an ever-growing mob in thrall to the concept. Part of me understands why. There’s a power to the phrase, an allure. It promises inclusion. Protection. Comradery. Common purpose. Belonging.

Silence as a Statement

“Silence is a statement, Diago. Inaction picks a side. And when those lead to personal benefit, they are complicity.”

Nervousness is a Blessing

“It’s true.” He was always so gentle. “Nervousness means there’s a fear to be faced ahead, Diago. The man who is never nervous, never does anything hard. The man who is never nervous, never grows.” He stroked my hair. “Do all you can to think of it as an opportunity. A blessing. No matter how it makes you feel in here.”

Complainers vs Doers

There are those who see what should be, and complain that they do not get their due. And then there are those who see what is, and figure out how to use it to their advantage. Or at the least, overcome it.

Not one of us has the Right to Lead

“You need to be caring, and judgmental. You need to pre-empt but never unfairly. You need to be completely honest with your people, but be mindful of what information could harm them. You need to — ” “It’s impossible,” I said, somewhat impatiently. “You’re saying there’s no such thing as a good ruler.” “There isn’t.” He sounded surprised that I got the answer so quickly, though he didn’t compliment me on it. “And this is the risk of our world, Diago. The flaw of our system is in its head. In us. The qualities of a king change the kingdom. And not one of us is perfect enough to have a right to lead.”
