MCLA Top 15: Week 6

Last night there was game that delayed my poll. The result was an old power returning to the winners bracket and making a league wide statement. This wasn’t UCSB, it was my Men’s League Hockey team U.S.Eh?

Because of the late hockey game I didn’t get my poll finished up last night, which honestly was just as well because I get the chance to include the UCSB/CU results in my poll. From my understanding ballots were due Tuesday at Noon so none of the actual voters were able to vote based on that result. It will be very interesting to see how much the voters take that into account after a string of GREAT games coming this weekend. CU gets Arizona State and UCSB gets CSU. Will wins and losses in these games mitigate/amplify Tuesday night’s result? Probably.

As I compare my poll to the actual MCLA poll (see the number to the right), I realize that there isn’t THAT much difference in the Top 15. I think Virginia Tech is laughably overrated based on current results, but that’s really the only complaint. If you compare my results to Alex Smith’s ballot here, you see we generally have the same teams in a different order (He has FSU, I have UConn).

The real disaster of the poll is from 15–25. Nobody knows/cares enough about all those teams to get them ranked properly.

Justify Liberty at 16 over Florida State.

This lends more credence to my proposal that voters submit 15 names, rank the top 20. There just isn’t enough information available for coaches across the country to rank 25 teams. I am gathering all my (and others) ideas to make improve the poll, but this will be at the top of my list.

On to the poll!

1. Chapman (1)

The Stanford game was certainly closer than they would have liked, but impressive second half comeback by the Panthers to hold on. The best team doesn’t always win big, they just win. The gap between Chapman and Georgia Tech feels like it’s widening.

Breakdown

Top 25 Wins: 5 (#3 BYU, #4 CU, #12 Stanford, #18 Sonoma, #25 UVU)
Top 25 Losses: 0
Unranked Wins: 5
Unranked Losses: 0

2. Georgia Tech (2)

I noticed that Alex Smith dropped Georgia Tech behind BYU. I’m not quite ready to do that, mostly because BYU lacks a top 10 win, but if the Cougars beat the ‘Lopes on Friday they will be my new #2.

Breakdown

Top 25 Wins: 3 (#6 Boston College, #13 Virginia Tech, #16 Liberty)
Top 25 Losses: 0
Unranked Wins: 6
Unranked Losses: 0

3. BYU (3)

BYU vs GCU is a big time game on Friday night. First, it’s being played on South Field at BYU, the BEST venue in the MCLA. Second it’s a chance for BYU to lock down that elusive top 10 win. BYU didn’t shy away in their scheduling, but who would have expected ASU to be on the outside looking in at this point? Either way, huge game for both teams.

Breakdown

Top 25 Wins: 4 (#11 ASU, #20 SDSU, #21 Boise State, #23 UNLV)
Top 25 Losses: 1 (#1 Chapman)
Unranked Wins: 6
Unranked Losses: 0

4. Cal Poly (5)

Move up by virtue of the CU drop. Idle last week.

Breakdown

Top 25 Wins: 3 (#11 ASU, #15 UCSB)
Top 25 Losses: 1 (#8 GCU)
Unranked Wins: 5
Unranked Losses: 0

5. Boston College (6)

I still like their wins, but the Liberty win is losing luster. They are criminally over ranked at 16.

Breakdown

Top 25 Wins: 3 (#8 GCU, #11 ASU, #16 Liberty)
Top 25 Losses: 2 (#2 Georgia Tech, #7 Arizona)
Unranked Wins: 1
Unranked Losses: 0

6. Oregon (10)

It doesn’t feel right having them up this far, but with a game against Chapman on Friday night I feel comfortable that it will sort it self out soon. 6–11 is a quagmire of teams that could all argue one should be above the other.

Breakdown

Top 25 Wins: 1 (#9 CSU)
Top 25 Losses: 1 (#5 CU)
Unranked Wins: 5
Unranked Losses: 0

7. Colorado (4)

The Buff are riding a 2 game losing streak into a weekend date against ASU. A game that felt like a must win for ASU is now a must win for both. Inconsistency is the mark of youth, this is a young team.

Breakdown

Top 25 Wins: 4 (#7 Arizona, #10 Oregon, #20 SDSU, #21 Boise State)
Top 25 Losses: 3 (#1 Chapman, #8 GCU, #15 UCSB)
Unranked Wins: 0
Unranked Losses: 0

8. Colorado State (9)

Not much new to say about the Rams. ASU this weekend will be another good test for them.

Breakdown

Top 25 Wins: 3(#9 GCU, #18 Sonoma, #21 Boise State)
Top 25 Losses: 2 (#7 Arizona, #10 Oregon)
Unranked Wins: 1
Unranked Losses: 0

9. UCSB (15)

I struggled with having UCSB below CU. It felt wrong and I had to examine if I weighting CU recent history more than I should. It came down to valuing the Arizona+Oregon wins more than CU+Sonoma. Like I said, I think each team has a case for reordering here.

Breakdown

Top 25 Wins: 3 (#4 CU, #18 Sonoma, #24 UNLV)
Top 25 Losses: 2 (#5 Cal Poly, #12 Stanford)
Unranked Wins: 3
Unranked Losses: 0

10. Arizona (7)

I’m going to hurry and finish this so I don’t have to worry about the Boise State results. It helps that UNLV jumped back into the top 25, even if it was a week late. UVU is on the brink of dropping out. A win vs Boise State tonight feels like a necessity. (Arizona up by 3 at publication)

Breakdown

Top 25 Wins: 3 (#6 Boston College, #9 CSU, #25 UVU)
Top 25 Losses: 2(#4 CU, #23 UNLV)
Unranked Wins: 0
Unranked Losses: 0

11. Grand Canyon (9)

I really wanted to bump them up after the dismantling of Boise State, I couldn’t bring myself to do it with the body of work. They will get their chance this weekend vs BYU. Grand Canyon is still looking for their first win over the Cougars. GCU is hitting their stride at the right time to give the Cougs a run.

Breakdown

Top 25 Wins: 3 (#4 CU, #5 Cal Poly, #21 Boise State)
Top 25 Losses: 3 (#6 Boston College, #9 CSU, #25 UVU)
Unranked Wins: 0
Unranked Losses: 0

12. Stanford (12)

Proved they can hang with the big dogs, proved they can’t close it out. 12 still feels right.

Breakdown

Top 25 Wins: 1 (#15 UCSB)
Top 25 Losses: 2 (#1 Chapman, #14 Oregon State)
Unranked Wins: 5
Unranked Losses: 0

13. Arizona State (11)

Nothing new from last week. Big time weekend in Colorado for the Devils.

Breakdown

Top 25 Wins: 1 (#14 Oregon State)
Top 25 Losses: 3 (#3 BYU, #5 Cal Poly, #6 Boston College)
Unranked Wins: 1
Unranked Losses: 0

14. Oregon State (14)

No change. Just still here. Being kind of less than impressive.

Breakdown

Top 25 Wins: 1 (#12 Stanford)
Top 25 Losses: 2 (#11 ASU, #18 Sonoma)
Unranked Wins: 4
Unranked Losses: 0

15. Connecticut (19)

I debated putting FSU here, but I’m going to give the nod to Connecticut on the back of a good weekend from New Hampshire. The PCLL is underrated. I think UConn will have a chance to prove how good their are with their league schedule, so I don’t mind having them here for now. Either they prove they belong, or they drop out.

Breakdown

Top 25 Wins: 1 (#13 Virginia Tech)
Top 25 Losses: 0
Unranked Wins: 3
Unranked Losses: 0
