With the promise of knowledge and camaraderie, developers from all over Manila gathered for Kotlin PH’s meetup. The meetup was hosted by Home Credit at Clock In BGC on Wednesday, March 27, 2019, and gathered approximately 50 participants.

Kotlin PH by Philippine Android Developers Community (PADC) is the Philippines’ largest mobile developer community.

Introduction to Jetbrains

The day starts with Aaron Koh’s talk on introducing us to their platform, Jetbrains. While asking how many of us participants have experienced with their software he showed us infographics on how many developers all over Asia use Jetbrains and Kotlin. After his talk, he announced that there would be 5 possible winners of the one-year Jetbrains license that was raffled at the event.

Kotlin for Backend

Bert Anasco-Kotlin for backend using Serverless + AWS Lambda

The next speaker was Bert Anasco on using Kotlin for Backend development. He started his talk showing the differences between Java and Kotlin and how Kotlin has improved his productivity ever since he started using the language. After his short explanation of Kotlin, he then started showing the tools he uses for Backend development using AWS Lambda.

Because Kotlin for backend has not been explored by developers as much, participants asked a lot of questions regarding the pros and cons of the technology. Questions included the following:

  • How is the scaling?
  • What companies use this?
  • How would you optimize the calls, should you group the methods functionality-wise?
  • Have you ever reached the maximum usage and what would you do if that happens?

Mobile Development on Enterprise

Miroslav Barcak — Integration of a Mobile App into an Enterprise Environment

The last speaker of the day would be Miroslav Barcak a senior engineer of Home Credit. His talk focused on architecture and how to structure a project from the ground up.

If you want to know how to properly slice your application you have to ask yourself this question:

“What is it that my application really does?”

By using his hand-drawn illustrations, his presentation was eye-catching and memorable.

By the end of the meetup, 5 participants won Jetbrains licenses. Pictures were taken, new networks were formed, and the next meetup is on April 24, 2019, at Freelancer HQ, BGC.
