For this alum, knowing what the goal is only half the journey

Laura King (’12) shares her story the first episode of season 3 of the Unconventional Podcast.

When Laura entered her MSc program in biology at McMaster, she knew she wanted to build a career in wildlife conservation. How that was going to happen and what, exactly, it would look like was still up in the air.

“I never had a master plan,” says Laura. “I just knew that I wanted to be a biologist and knew that there might be side roads that would eventually get me there.”

Her journey from graduation to working for the federal government in wildlife toxicology in Newfoundland, was far from straightforward. With brief stops here and there to achieve new and different goals, such as becoming fully bilingual, Laura shares the story of how she built a meaningful career that allows her to blend her skills and knowledge with her interests every day.
