From Energy Policy to YouTuber, Ramneek Dimen (’12, ’14) shares her tale on Mac Alumni’s Unconventional Podcast

YouTube Channel provides supports and insights to new and first-generation students

Going to McMaster was a defining moment for Ramneek. Up until then, she wasn’t too sure of where she was going or what she wanted to do with her life.

“I actually did not have a master plan,” she says. “My path, even before I went to university, was always very unclear and I was always in this state of figuring it out as I went along.”

But once at Mac, Ramneek says she started to find clarity and a sense of direction. Now she’s a Senior Policy & Regulatory Professional working for Seattle City Light. In her spare time, she creates YouTube videos that aim to support students offering insights and resources as they try to navigate the ups and downs of university life.

“There’s a lot of other students who are similar to me — first-generation students that don’t have the support, or resources, or knowledge, or someone pointing us in the right direction,” she says. “I help them try and navigate some of the academic and post-academic realm by sharing my lessons learned and providing some tips on how to get ahead of your career, even while you’re in school.”

For Ramneek, it’s never only about the destination — the journey is just as important. But, she says, there’s no rule that says you have to do it alone.

“All of the lessons learned throughout my journey; making a lot of mistakes and then having to figure it out as I went a long — I try to share those with students…so they can avoid some of the mistakes I made,” she says.

McMaster has more than 210,000 alumni living in 140 countries around the world, and they are some of the most amazing people you would ever want to meet. The Unconventional podcast will introduce some of our alumni who are working — in the arts, as cutting-edge entrepreneurs, leading the way in health, education, technology and more — to make our world a brighter place in their own unique way.
