Hyper light Drifter a homage to the classic Legend of Zelda for the NES(Nintendo Entertainment System). A pixel art side-scrolling RPG(role-playing game) on PC, Xbox One and PS4.

You play as a warrior following the dark evil that seems to destroy and kill everything it’s around. The goal is just that, find the darkness, and to destroy whatever it is corrupting. With the obstacle, of the map and monsters(which also include the bosses that the darkness corrupts). The reward while traveling through and killing monsters and bosses, is given by as Experience points with you can use to obtain new abilities and new powers as well as different items to open new areas or weapons.

The goal is quite obscure in the game. With only pictures to tell the story(literally no words was written or said by any character). NPCs speak with images. Images of bosses, items, and sometimes destinations of importance. There is an NPC Knight that hints who is the boss is using a close-up picture of the boss.

The obstacles of the game include the environment, monsters and the bosses, but with obstacles comes with punishment. You have to keep track of your health bar, stamina bar, ammo bar, as well as your potions and other items.

Hyper Light Drifter: Combat, Environment and UI. Top left corner shows health bar(green), Ammo(pink), Stamina(grey), Potions (far-left with + Sign) and Bombs(on potions right, white)

Dying would send you back to the previous save losing most progress. The challenge is the ever rising difficulty and number of monsters. Even the map and environments contain puzzles, like closed doors or patterns to assemble.

But to succeed, feels awesome. Rewards like experience points(which you can use to buy upgrades), unlocked areas(for secrets or special items), and shortcuts to help you speed some things up. With a game with strong punishments these rewards are meant to be used with care, for the smallest misuse or mistake can send you back to your save.
