I, like you, want to do meaningful things in my life.

How we define “meaningful” is not only different for each one of us but I also believe that how we define it changes as we change, as we grow, as we evolve.

One of the challenging things about being a professional (and being human) is not comparing our definitions with others and/or making another’s meaningful decisions our own without serious thought and scrutiny.

When we’re younger we tend to borrow and adapt our own definition to those that we admire and respect and look up to. Over time, though, we are faced with the opportunity to create our own paths or to continue to borrow heavily from the historical influences.

I’m not sure that this is always a bad thing but I think each of our paths are different and there’s a reason why they are different. I have met folks older (and younger) than me who do not seem to realize that they have this choice and that they have the freedom to choose.

They are still copiously borrow from other sources and have never ventured forth on their own. It’s a shame because I think there’s so much to learn from the adventure of self-discovery and finding our own unique and meaningful work.

It is our art, you know. Our very own pieces of art that we create. These manifest itself through our vocation and our relationships.

I’m still searching, still reading, still learning and understanding as well. But “safe” is something that I’m not reaching for. I don’t want to trade meaningful opportunities and relationships to stay put, to stay safe.
