Andrew Rasmussen describes himself as an “educator for democracy, proud union member, awkward goof ball, and aging punk!” He has been a middle school social studies teacher in the Des Moines Public Schools for 23 years. He served as the elected president of his local teachers union for six years. His three stepchildren all attend public school and his new baby helps out on the campaign trail.

Andrew’s policies would be deemed progressive in today’s political environment. He calls for a 6% increase in state aid to public schools, cancellation of recent tax cuts, and strict standards to prevent farming related pollution. He points out that these changes are not radical. They will bring Iowa back to the state it was in before recent Republican control.

Andrew’s opponent in this Northern suburb of Des Moines is Republican incumbent John Landon. Landon proposed successful legislation that promotes health benefit plans. These plans provide lower quality coverage and are deemed “not health insurance.” This means that they can ask enrollees about preexisting conditions. Plans like the one proposed by Landon undermine the success of the Affordable Care Act by siphoning away healthy individuals. When only the sick are enrolled in the marketplace, the costs become unsustainable.

When elected, I will work tirelessly to turn this state around and bring it back to a place where we are first in the nation in education, a place where every Iowan has an opportunity to grow and thrive with a solid middle class job.

A place where workers are treated with dignity and have the right to bargain a fair contract with their employer.

A place where we use common sense to balance our budget and take care of the vital services Iowans deserve.

A place where our precious land, air and water are taken care of with strong protections and good land stewardship, and a state where we avoid the toxic extremism driven by outside interests and groups not representing the voice of the majority.

I pledge to return to common sense and moderation in the halls of the capitol.

I hope I can win your support and vote. I look forward to fighting for a forward looking vision for Iowa.

Donate today to help Andrew bring his vision to Iowa!
