  • Post your diagram & deployment to Medium

1. Reading/Discussion: Privacy

Read the following on privacy:

Think about how privacy impacts your system and how you will address it. Be prepared to discuss this and these readings in the next class

2. Diagram your system showing how it changes behavior in space.

Consider the following:

RITUAL

What ritual or behavior are you trying to change with your system? What is your system’s goal: i.e. to get people to talk to each other during a networking event, or to make people in a classroom want to go outside when the weather is good?

SOCIAL

Who is present during this ritual? Is it intended for one person, a small group, a crowd? What is the expected behavior of that group? Loud, quiet, inquisitive? How does that group behavior change based on your system?

PLACE

Choose a location for your system. Where should it exist? Where should it not exist? How does the place your system exists change what the system should do? If you are using light, projection, or sound how does it adapt to the environment? Does it respond to a table, a door, a mantel? Does sound happen throughout a room, or just in one corner? Why?

3. Deploy your system in physical space! Observe and record how it changes behavior in space.

BEFORE

How does the space feel before the system is deployed? What are people doing and why? Record the space before your system is deployed.

AFTER

How does the space feel after you deploy it? How does behavior change? Did it change in the way you expected it to? Why or why not? Document and record how the space changed after.

Measuring the Great Indoors

This is a course at Columbia University’s GSAPP exploring techniques for working with data from the physical world, with the aim of understanding and manipulating dynamic, interactive environments, taught by Gaby Brainard and Violet Whitney.
